CNN media correspondent and Reliable Sources anchor Brian Stelter has signed a deal with One Signal, an imprint of Simon & Schuster’s Atria Press, for an untitled book about Fox News and President Donald Trump. According to Axios, the publisher has said the book will offer readers a look “behind the scenes of a TV network and a White House merging in unprecedented fashion.” Stelter is the author of 2013 New York Times bestseller Top of the Morning: Inside the Cutthroat World of Morning TV (Grand Central). Publishers Marketplace listed the publication date as 2020. According to Deadline, Cheiffetz said in a statement, “You can’t understand America right now without understanding the role of Fox News, and no one is better positioned to tell that story than Brian Stelter.”
One Signal is the new name of Signal Press, an imprint spearheaded by Vice President and Publisher Julia Cheiffetz. Other titles the imprint will be publishing include How to Raise a Boy: Rethinking Gender in America After #Metoo, by Washington Post reporter Emma Brown, who broke the Brett Kavanaugh story, There She Is: The Secret History of Miss America by Washington Post styles editor and staff writer Amy Argetsinger, a biography of journalist and civil rights leader Ida B. Wells written by her great-granddaughter Michelle Duster, a biography of Elon Musk by Bloomberg reporter Tom Randall, Stanley Fish’s The First: The First: How to Think About Hate Speech, Campus Speech, Religious Speech, Fake News, Post-Truth, and Donald Trump, out in October, and We Are Indivisible: A Blueprint for Democracy After Trump by Indivisible Project founders Leah Greenberg and Ezra Levin, out in November.
In a January 2019 press release, Cheiffetz said of her vision for the imprint, “My favorite books are what I call ‘nutritional candy’ – books that engage with serious subject matter in a way that is captivating, sometimes playful, and always story driven. It is an exciting moment in the culture for feminism and politics and I look forward to giving a platform to a diverse group of writers who will harness that energy. Signal will publish books that are bold and enduring.” During her previous tenure at HarperCollins, Cheiffetz was the editor who conceptualized the 2015 New York Times bestseller Notorious RBG: The Life and Times of Ruth Bader Ginsburg by Irin Carmon and Shana Knizhnik.
In an interview with Refinery29, Cheiffetz said that while the vast majority of her acquisitions are via literary agents, she is also proactive about seeking our writers for specific projects. “[T]he New York Times ran that fabulous Overlooked column about women who are left out of the obituary column, including one about Ida B. Wells, the activist and journalist. I couldn’t understand why no one had written a popular biography? There’s a lot of academic work, but she was this incredible maverick, visionary, trailblazer. I managed to get in touch with her great-granddaughter, who’s now contracted to write a biography,” Cheiffetz explained. As for her dream author, Cheiffetz told Refinery29, “I want to publish a book by Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. I think she’s amazing, and we’d love to publish her.”
