Clare Mackintosh shares her writing tips – Times of India

After spending 12 years in the British police force, Clare Mackintosh left it in 2011 to work as a writer and spend more time with her family. While she had her share of struggles of being a full-time writer, fame was inevitable for the author as her 2015 debut novel I Let You Go was an instant bestseller and it also became the fastest-selling title by a new crime writer of the year. “I quit the police and found that crime pays,” she revealed to the Sunday Times in an interview.
Since then, there is no looking back for the British author. She wrote I See You in 2016 and Let Me Lie in 2018. Over 2 million copies of her books have been sold. Her works have been translated into 35 languages.
Clare was also an esteemed speaker at the Times Literature Festivals (TLF)- Kolkata and Delhi in 2018. In one of the panel discussions titled ‘Cop Tales: Inside a Criminal’s Mind’ at TLF Delhi, she said that while her stories are fictional, the inspiration comes from real life. At TLF Kolkata she shared her writing tips for aspiring authors in a talk titled ‘How to Write a Successful Thriller’. She was much loved by the audiences for her candid insights at both the festivals.

The bestselling author recently took to her official Twitter handle where shared her “five quick tips for writers (at any stage – I remind myself of these frequently!)”. Here’s what she wrote:

1. Finishing your writing session halfway through a scene means you can dive straight in next time you’re at your desk. No more staring at a blank page!

2. Don’t obsess over polishing the perfect sentence – push on and get the story written. That sentence might not even make the final cut.

3. If you’re struggling to write, pick a favourite book and type out a few pages. The action often unlocks the creative part of your brain.

4. Five minutes writing is better than no minutes. Practice writing in short bursts – you’ll get more done than waiting for a completely clear day.

5. Don’t feel compelled to write scenes in order. If you’re dying to write something that comes later, let yourself jump ahead.

Fellow authors and aspiring writers might find these tips to be useful or might not fully agree with them, Clare adds, “PSA: this is *my* way, I am not telling you what to do.”

Meanwhile, Clare’s latest book After the End is expected to hit the bookstores on June 25 this year.
