Local author releases children’s book that challenges social norms – Clarksville Now

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (CLARKSVILLENOW) – Clarksville native and Tennessee-based author Hannah Carmona Dias is releasing her second children’s picture book.

Dazzling Travis was inspired by a theatre student of Dias who approached her with a gender-based dilemma.

“My teacher thinks I’m gay,” her student confessed to her, “because I like musical theatre.”

Dias said she knew the issue ran deeper than just the question of gay or straight. She thought of how recently her daughter’s pediatrician had labeled her a ‘tomboy’ because she loved race cars. Dias decided she wanted to erase the need for gendered labels in society, especially for children.

“Labels were becoming a problem across the board and really starting to irk me,” she said.

Her second book was born after the conversation with her theatre student. Dias wanted to write a book that encouraged both girls and boys alike to explore their interests and not feel that they needed to be placed in a box because of what they liked or disliked.

Dazzling Travis will be available in April 2019 through Cardinal Rule Press.
