CHANGE THINGS: If you bank with Lloyds, Halifax or Bank of Scotland, use Save The Change. When you buy something with your debit card, they round up the amount to the nearest Pound and transfer the difference into your savings account. Monzo’s app also lets you set aside money from your current account into a virtual “pot”, automatically rounding up your purchases to the nearest Pound and saving the difference. If, say, your coffee costs £2.20, it will send over the 80p. Or you could join a scheme such as Switchcraft, which automatically switches you to the cheapest energy deal, saving money long-term.

BOOK SMART: Got old books, DVDs or games lying around gathering dust? webuybooks.co.uk and ziffit.com let you trade them in for cash, including school textbooks and pregnancy guides.

BACK YOURSELF: Make money when you shop by using cashback sites, such as topcashback.co.uk and quidco.com. Most banks and building societies also have cashback schemes, paying up to 15 per cent when you use your debit card online and in store.

BUY NOT?: Sign up to site babyswaporshop.co.uk to sell baby or maternity items. Other users will buy anything from previously-owned bedding to cots, pushchairs and even nursing pillows.  You can also swap items if you both have items you need.  It is ideal if you have got old stuff cluttering up your garage or loft.

GET THE GIFT: Turn old gift cards into cash by heading to zapper.co.uk, which buys unused vouchers and gift cards for around a quarter less than the face value.
